Milieu, Atmosphere, Ambience, Ambiance:

[Dictionary Definitions]:

• ‘milieu: an environment; (esp. social) surroundings; (synonyms) environment, surroundings, background, setting, scene, location, sphere, element.’ (Oxford Dictionary).

• ‘atmosphere: (fig.) mental or moral environment; a pervading tone or mood; associations, effects, sounds, etc., evoking a characteristic mood; (v.t.) surround (as) with an atmosphere (lit. & fig.); (example) a friendly/ unfriendly atmosphere: environment, milieu, medium, background, setting, air, ambience, aura, climate, mood, feeling, character, tone, tenor, spirit, quality, flavour; surroundings.’ (Oxford Dictionary).

As will be seen the words ambience, atmosphere and milieu all have more or less the same meaning but I have chosen to draw an artificial and non-dictionary distinction simply for the sake of both clarity and consistency in communication. Vis.:

• [Dictionary Definition]: ‘ambience: environment, surroundings; atmosphere.’ (Oxford Dictionary).

I guess that word appeals to me because of my artistic back-ground as the (French) word ambiance – spelt with an ‘a’ – has particular associations for me. For instance:

• [Dictionary Definition]: ‘ambiance: the combination of the surrounding and accessory elements of a painting to support the main effect of a piece.’ (Oxford Dictionary).

It was only when a painting painted itself, so to speak, that being out from control first became apparent for the identity inhabiting this flesh and blood body all those years ago.
